Ash Wednesday today
Ash Wednesday is a holy day in the Catholic Church that marks the beginning of the season of Lent, a period of 40 days of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving leading up to Easter Sunday.
On Ash Wednesday, Catholics attend a special Mass where the priest blesses and distributes ashes on the foreheads of the faithful. The ashes are made from the burned palm fronds of the previous year's Palm Sunday and are a symbol of repentance, humility, and mortality.
During the distribution of ashes, the priest says either "Remember that you are dust, and to dust, you shall return" or "Repent, and believe in the Gospel." The ash cross on the forehead serves as a reminder for Catholics to reflect on their lives and to turn away from sin, as well as a sign of their faith and commitment to God.
On Ash Wednesday, Catholics are encouraged to fast and abstain from meat and to increase their prayer and charitable works throughout the season of Lent.
