The (Roman CatholicDiocese of Udon Thani (Dioecesis UdonthaniensisThai: สังฆมณฑลอุดรธานี) is in northeast Thailand. It is a suffragan diocese of the archdiocese of Thare and Nonseng.
The diocese covers an area of 50,046 km², covering five provinces of ThailandKhon KaenLoeiNongbua LamphuNong Khai, and Udon Thani. As of 2001, of the 5.3 million citizens, 5,612 are members of the Catholic Church. It is divided into 56 parishes, having 31 priests altogether.
The Prefecture Apostolic of Udonthani was created on May 7, 1953, when the Vicariate Apostolic of Thare was split. On December 18, 1965 the Prefecture Apostolic was elevated to a diocese.

The Cathedral of Our Mother of Perpetual Help (Thai: อาสนวิหารพระมารดานิจจานุเคราะห์) is located in Udon Thani town.

Joseph Luechai Thatwisai

Joseph Luechai Thatwisai (born December 2, 1962, Thaiลือชัย ธาตุวิสัยRTGSLue-chai Thatwisai) is appointed Roman Catholic Bishop of Udon Thani diocese.
Joseph Luechai Thatwisai was ordained a priest in 1990. He obtains a pontifical degree in Scripture and was professor of biblical theology at Thailand's Saeng Tham National Major Seminary from 2000 to 2006. Afterwards he earned a PhD in biblical studies at the Catholic Institute of Paris. Since 2008 he was secretary of the Thai bishops’ Catholic Commission for the Bible commission.
Pope Benedict XVI made the episcopal appointment on November 14, 2009.[1] He was ordained a bishop by his predecessor, Bishop George Yod PhimphisanC.Ss.R., on February 6, 2010.


Bishop Joseph Luechai Thatwisai, the third Bishop of Udon Thani, in northeastern Thailand, was born on Dec. 2, 1962 in Phonsung, in Udon Thani diocese.

In 1983 he entered Saeng Tham College (Lux Mundi, Light of the World), the national major seminary, to study philosophy and theology, and was ordained a priest on May 24, 1990 for Udon Thani diocese.

From 1990 to 1991 he served as assistant parish priest at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Ban Phai and manager of Holy Redeemer School, both in Khon Kaen province.

The following year he went back to Saeng Tham College to study foreign languages in preparation for further studies overseas.

From 1993 to 1997 he studied for a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture at Pontificium Institutum Biblicum in Rome, and resided at the Pontifical College of St. Paul the Apostle.

In 1998, he went for pastoral experience at Parish of St. Philip the Apostle in Pasadena, California, the United States.

From 1998 to 2000 he was professor of Biblical Theology at Saeng Tham College.

After that he studied for a Doctorate in Biblical Studies at the Catholic Institute of Paris.

In 2007 he came back to Thailand and served as professor of Biblical Theology at Saeng Tham.

In 2008 he became secretary of the Biblical Commission of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Thailand.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on Nov. 14, 2009 Bishop of Udon Thani. His episcopal ordination was on Feb. 6, 2010.
