Pope Francis says Panama to be 'a hub of hope' during World Youth Day

.- Upon arriving in Panama for World Youth Day 2019, Pope Francis met with politicians, diplomats and civil society leaders, extending a message of hope for “a more humane world.”
“In these days, Panama … will turn into a hub of hope,” Pope Francis told leaders gathered outside Panama City’s Bolivar Palace Jan. 24.
“Young people demand a commitment in which all – beginning with those of us who call ourselves Christians – have the audacity to build an authentically human politics that makes the person the centre and heart of everything,” he said.In his first public appearance since his arrival in Panama, Pope Francis emphasized that “it is possible to defend the common good above the interests of a few or for few only when there is a firm decision to share with justice one’s goods.”
“The younger generation, with its joy and enthusiasm, with its freedom, sensitivity and critical capacity, demands that adults, and especially all those who exercise roles of leadership in public life, lead a life consonant with the dignity and authority that they possess and that has been entrusted to them,” he said.
Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from around the world are in Panama this week for World Youth Day, which will culminate with an overnight prayer vigil and Mass with Pope Francis Jan. 26-27.
Pope Saint John Paul II created World Youth Day in 1985 to harness the energy of young people and encourage them to participate in his call for the New Evangelization. This year marks the first time World Youth Day is hosted in Central America.
In his remarks to the Panamanian leadership, Pope Francis reflected upon Panama’s “vocation” to be “a land of convocation and encounter.” “A bridge between oceans and a natural land of encounter, Panama, the narrowest country of the entire American continent, is the symbol of the sustainability born of the ability to create bonds and alliances,” Francis commented.
“The genius of these lands is marked by the richness of its indigenous peoples: the bribri, bugle, emberá, kuna, nasoteribe, ngäbe and waunana, who have so much to relate and recall from their culture and vision of the world,” he said.
He added: “To be a land of convocation means celebrating, acknowledging and listening to what is specific about each of these peoples and of all those men and women who make up the face of Panama and work to build a future of hope.”
The pope quoted the Panamanian writer Ricardo Miró, who once wrote, “When they see you, my native land, they might say that you were shaped by God’s will, so that beneath the sun shining down upon you, all humanity can come together in you.”
“By welcoming the dreams of these young people, Panama becomes once more a land of dreams that challenges so many certainties of our time and opens up vital horizons that can enrich the path ahead through a respectful and compassionate gaze upon others,” Pope Francis said.

Pope Francs at WYD Panama latest News 24/01/2019

WYD Panama: Pope

Francis arrives and

World Youth Day begins

For thousands of young people, the arrival of
Pope Francis in Panama on Wednesday afternoon
marks the true beginning of the 34th World Youth Day.
By Seán-Patrick Lovett
There were those who had waited at the airport all day.
And it was hot (33°C not counting the horrendous humidity).
There were those who had practiced their dance routines for
months. And they added elegance and energy to the event.
There were those who had created costumes and national
dresses for the occasion. And they brought colour and
culture to this historical Panamanian afternoon.

1983

The last time a Pope stepped off a plane from Rome onto
the soil of Panama was 36 years ago. It was March 5th 1983.
And the Pope was John Paul II.
The world was still dominated by the North American and
Soviet superpowers, and the Motorola Company had just
launched the first mobile phone, very different to the one
on which you are probably reading or listening to this report right now.

2019

The flying time from Rome to Panama City is just under
13 hours. And there’s a 6-hour time difference.
So Pope Francis looked justifiably tired as he walked down
the steps of the Alitalia aircraft and greeted Panamanian P
resident Juan Carlos Varela Rodríguez and the First Lady.
With head bowed he listened attentively to the national
anthems of the Holy See and Panama, respectively, and
shook hands with the authorities present.
Then, just as the security detail was dutifully ushering him
into the waiting car, the Pope turned and waded into the
crowd that had been trying frantically to grab his attention
in every way possible.
That’s when his demeanour changed dramatically. At the
sight of the smiling, flushed and excited faces (not to mention
the beautiful babies thrust at him from every direction),
Pope Francis became suddenly animated. It was as though
he had just woken up. Every sign of fatigue disappeared as
he waved, hugged, blessed and beamed with obvious delight.

Tomorrow

On Thursday, the papal programme begins in earnest. His
first appointment of the day is at the Presidential Palace
where he pays a courtesy visit on the President and meets
local Authorities and members of the Diplomatic Corps. He
will also have an important encounter with the Bishops of
Central America before lunch.
But the highlight of the day, at least as far as the young
people are concerned, is the opening ceremony for the
World Youth Day at the Campo Santa Maria di Antigua on
the Coastal Belt. But more about that…tomorrow

JW Daily Text Bible Reading Wednesday January 23, 2019

Daily Reading for Wednesday January 23, 2019

Reading 1, Hebrews 7:1-3, 15-17
Responsorial Psalm, Psalms 110:1, 2, 3, 4
Gospel, Mark 3:1-6

Reading 1, Hebrews 7:1-3, 15-17

1 Melchizedek, king of Salem, a priest of God Most High, came to meet Abraham when he returned from defeating the kings, and blessed him;
2 and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. By the interpretation of his name, he is, first, 'king of saving justice' and also king of Salem, that is, 'king of peace';
3 he has no father, mother or ancestry, and his life has no beginning or ending; he is like the Son of God. He remains a priest for ever.
15 This becomes even more clearly evident if another priest, of the type of Melchizedek, arises who is a priest
16 not in virtue of a law of physical descent, but in virtue of the power of an indestructible life.
17 For he is attested by the prophecy: You are a priest for ever of the order of Melchizedek.

Responsorial Psalm, Psalms 110:1, 2, 3, 4

1 [Of David Psalm] Yahweh declared to my Lord, 'Take your seat at my right hand, till I have made your enemies your footstool.'
2 Yahweh will stretch out the sceptre of your power; from Zion you will rule your foes all around you.
3 Royal dignity has been yours from the day of your birth, sacred honour from the womb, from the dawn of your youth.
4 Yahweh has sworn an oath he will never retract, you are a priest for ever of the order of Melchizedek.

Gospel, Mark 3:1-6

1 Another time he went into the synagogue, and there was a man present whose hand was withered.
2 And they were watching him to see if he would cure him on the Sabbath day, hoping for something to charge him with.
3 He said to the man with the withered hand, 'Get up and stand in the middle!'
4 Then he said to them, 'Is it permitted on the Sabbath day to do good, or to do evil; to save life, or to kill?' But they said nothing.
5 Then he looked angrily round at them, grieved to find them so obstinate, and said to the man, 'Stretch out your hand.' He stretched it out and his hand was restored.
6 The Pharisees went out and began at once to plot with the Herodians against him, discussing how to destroy him.

Reading 1, Isaiah 62:1-5
Responsorial Psalm, Psalms 96:1-2, 2-3, 7-8, 9-10
Gospel, John 2:1-12
Reading 2, First Corinthians 12:4-11

Reading 1, Isaiah 62:1-5

1 About Zion I will not be silent, about Jerusalem I shall not rest until saving justice dawns for her like a bright light and her salvation like a blazing torch.
2 The nations will then see your saving justice, and all kings your glory, and you will be called a new name which Yahweh's mouth will reveal.
3 You will be a crown of splendour in Yahweh's hand, a princely diadem in the hand of your God.
4 No more will you be known as 'Forsaken' or your country be known as 'Desolation'; instead, you will be called 'My Delight is in her' and your country 'The Wedded'; for Yahweh will take delight in you and your country will have its wedding.
5 Like a young man marrying a virgin, your rebuilder will wed you, and as the bridegroom rejoices in his bride, so will your God rejoice in you.

Responsorial Psalm, Psalms 96:1-2, 2-3, 7-8, 9-10

1 Sing a new song to Yahweh! Sing to Yahweh, all the earth!
2 Sing to Yahweh, bless his name! Proclaim his salvation day after day,
3 declare his glory among the nations, his marvels to every people!
7 Give to Yahweh, families of nations, give to Yahweh glory and power,
8 give to Yahweh the glory due to his name! Bring an offering and enter his courts,
9 adore Yahweh in the splendour of his holiness. Tremble before him, all the earth.
10 Say among the nations, 'Yahweh is king.' The world is set firm, it cannot be moved. He will judge the nations with justice.

Gospel, John 2:1-12

1 On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee. The mother of Jesus was there,
2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited.
3 And they ran out of wine, since the wine provided for the feast had all been used, and the mother of Jesus said to him, 'They have no wine.'
4 Jesus said, 'Woman, what do you want from me? My hour has not come yet.'
5 His mother said to the servants, 'Do whatever he tells you.'
6 There were six stone water jars standing there, meant for the ablutions that are customary among the Jews: each could hold twenty or thirty gallons.
7 Jesus said to the servants, 'Fill the jars with water,' and they filled them to the brim.
8 Then he said to them, 'Draw some out now and take it to the president of the feast.'
9 They did this; the president tasted the water, and it had turned into wine. Having no idea where it came from -- though the servants who had drawn the water knew -- the president of the feast called the bridegroom
10 and said, 'Everyone serves good wine first and the worse wine when the guests are well wined; but you have kept the best wine till now.'
11 This was the first of Jesus' signs: it was at Cana in Galilee. He revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him.
12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, but they stayed there only a few days.

Reading 2, First Corinthians 12:4-11

4 There are many different gifts, but it is always the same Spirit;
5 there are many different ways of serving, but it is always the same Lord.
6 There are many different forms of activity, but in everybody it is the same God who is at work in them all.
7 The particular manifestation of the Spirit granted to each one is to be used for the general good.
8 To one is given from the Spirit the gift of utterance expressing wisdom; to another the gift of utterance expressing knowledge, in accordance with the same Spirit;
9 to another, faith, from the same Spirit; and to another, the gifts of healing, through this one Spirit;
10 to another, the working of miracles; to another, prophecy; to another, the power of distinguishing spirits; to one, the gift of different tongues and to another, the interpretation of tongues.
11 But at work in all these is one and the same Spirit, distributing them at will to each individual.

Daily Reading for Saturday January 19, 2019

Reading 1, Hebrews 4:12-16
Responsorial Psalm, Psalms 19:8, 9, 10, 15
Gospel, Mark 8:14-21

Reading 1, Hebrews 4:12-16

12 The word of God is something alive and active: it cuts more incisively than any two-edged sword: it can seek out the place where soul is divided from spirit, or joints from marrow; it can pass judgement on secret emotions and thoughts.
13 No created thing is hidden from him; everything is uncovered and stretched fully open to the eyes of the one to whom we must give account of ourselves.
14 Since in Jesus, the Son of God, we have the supreme high priest who has gone through to the highest heaven, we must hold firm to our profession of faith.
15 For the high priest we have is not incapable of feeling our weaknesses with us, but has been put to the test in exactly the same way as ourselves, apart from sin.

16 Let us, then, have no fear in approaching the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace when we are in need of help.

Responsorial Psalm, Psalms 19:8, 9, 10, 15

8 The precepts of Yahweh are honest, joy for the heart; the commandment of Yahweh is pure, light for the eyes.
9 The fear of Yahweh is pure, lasting for ever; the judgements of Yahweh are true, upright, every one,
10 more desirable than gold, even than the finest gold; his words are sweeter than honey, that drips from the comb.

Gospel, Mark 8:14-21

14 The disciples had forgotten to take any bread and they had only one loaf with them in the boat.
15 Then he gave them this warning, 'Keep your eyes open; look out for the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.'
16 And they said to one another, 'It is because we have no bread.'
17 And Jesus knew it, and he said to them, 'Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not understand, still not realise? Are your minds closed?
18 Have you eyes and do not see, ears and do not hear? Or do you not remember?
19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of scraps did you collect?' They answered, 'Twelve.'
20 'And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many baskets full of scraps did you collect?' And they answered, 'Seven.'
21 Then he said to them, 'Do you still not realise?'

Psalm 111:10

Spiritual marker for early childhood: respect

The psalmist tells us, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" (Psalm 111:10).
Teach your young children these truths:
  • God is strong. He can do anything.
  • God always keeps His promises.
  • God gives us rules that we must obey.
  • Even if Mommy or Daddy can't see what you are doing, God sees it.
  • God disciplines us because He loves us.

Reading 1, Hebrews 4:1-5, 11
Responsorial Psalm, Psalms 78:3, 4, 6-7, 8
Gospel, Mark 2:1-12

Reading 1, Hebrews 4:1-5, 11

1 Let us beware, then: since the promise never lapses, none of you must think that he has come too late for the promise of entering his place of rest.
2 We received the gospel exactly as they did; but hearing the message did them no good because they did not share the faith of those who did listen.
3 We, however, who have faith, are entering a place of rest, as in the text: And then in my anger I swore that they would never enter my place of rest. Now God's work was all finished at the beginning of the world;
4 as one text says, referring to the seventh day: And God rested on the seventh day after all the work he had been doing.
5 And, again, the passage above says: They will never reach my place of rest.
11 Let us, then, press forward to enter this place of rest, or some of you might copy this example of refusal to believe and be lost.

Responsorial Psalm, Psalms 78:3, 4, 6-7, 8

3 What we have heard and know, what our ancestors have told us
4 we shall not conceal from their descendants, but will tell to a generation still to come: the praises of Yahweh, his power, the wonderful deeds he has done.
6 that a generation still to come might know it, children yet to be born. They should be sure to tell their own children,
7 and should put their trust in God, never forgetting God's great deeds, always keeping his commands,
8 and not, like their ancestors, be a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation weak of purpose, their spirit fickle towards God.

Gospel, Mark 2:1-12

1 When he returned to Capernaum, some time later word went round that he was in the house;
2 and so many people collected that there was no room left, even in front of the door. He was preaching the word to them
3 when some people came bringing him a paralytic carried by four men,
4 but as they could not get the man to him through the crowd, they stripped the roof over the place where Jesus was; and when they had made an opening, they lowered the stretcher on which the paralytic lay.
5 Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, 'My child, your sins are forgiven.'
6 Now some scribes were sitting there, and they thought to themselves,
7 'How can this man talk like that? He is being blasphemous. Who but God can forgive sins?'
8 And at once, Jesus, inwardly aware that this is what they were thinking, said to them, 'Why do you have these thoughts in your hearts?
9 Which of these is easier: to say to the paralytic, "Your sins are forgiven" or to say, "Get up, pick up your stretcher and walk"?
10 But to prove to you that the Son of man has authority to forgive sins on earth' --
11 he said to the paralytic-'I order you: get up, pick up your stretcher, and go off home.'
12 And the man got up, and at once picked up his stretcher and walked out in front of everyone, so that they were all astonished and praised God saying, 'We have never seen anything like this.'
