Pope Francis celebrated a Filipino Christmas tradition

.- On Gaudete Sunday, Pope Francis celebrated a Filipino Christmas tradition in St. Peter’s Basilica -- the Simbang Gabi Christmas novena.
“In the Philippines, for centuries, there has been a novena in preparation for Christmas called Simbang Gabi, 'Mass of the night'. During nine days the Filipino faithful gather at dawn in their parishes for a special Eucharistic celebration,” Pope Francis said Dec. 15.
“Through this celebration we want to prepare ourselves for Christmas according to the spirit of the Word of God that we have listened to, remaining constant until the Lord's definitive coming,” he said in his homily for the Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica.Pope Francis invited Rome’s Filipino community to celebrate Gaudete Sunday Mass at the Vatican in honor of the first day of the traditional novena. It is the first time that a pope has celebrated Simbang Gabi at the Vatican.
The Simbang Gabi tradition in the Philippines dates back to the 17th century. Filipinos hang a star outside their homes, and attend early morning Masses on each of the nine days before Christmas.
“In recent decades, thanks to Filipino migrants, this devotion has crossed national borders and has arrived in many other countries. Simbang-Gabi has also been celebrated in the diocese of Rome for years, and today we celebrate it together here, in St. Peter's Basilica,” Pope Francis said.
The pope told the Filipino community gathered in St. Peter’s Basilica that they are called to be “leaven” in their parish communities in Italy, and encouraged them to share their “cultural and spiritual wealth.”
There are over 167,000 Filipinos residing in Italy, according to the Italian Ministry of Labor. Fr. Ricky Gente, chaplain for the Filipino community in Rome, address Pope Francis following the Mass:
“Almost 500 years ago, European missionaries planted the seed of faith in our beloved Philippines. We are happy and blessed because after five centuries we are here in Europe and throughout the world transmitting the joy and beauty of the Gospel,” Fr. Gente said.
“Before the celebration of the last World Day of Migrants and Refugees, the Holy Father shared with me that Filipino women are ‘smugglers of the faith,’” the priest said.
"" Yes it is true we carry with us everywhere we go the torch of faith and of the Gospel in the world, the same faith and Gospel that have been transmitted to us. This is why today, here in front of you, you find a happy and smiling people because the flame of faith continues to burn intensely in our hearts," he added.
The Filipino community gave Pope Francis a traditional Marian statue as an early birthday gift. The pope will celebrate his 83rd birthday on Dec. 17. Pope Francis responded after receiving the gift: “Be smugglers of the faith.”
“We are all invited to build together that communion in diversity that constitutes a distinctive trait of the Kingdom of God, inaugurated by Jesus Christ, Son of God made man,” the pope said in his homily. “We are all called to proclaim the Gospel together, the Good News of salvation, in all languages, so as to reach as many people as possible.”
“To adequately prepare ourselves for this new outpouring of grace, the Church offers us the time of Advent, in which we are called to reawaken in our hearts the expectation and to intensify our prayer,” Francis said.
“May the Holy Child that we are preparing to worship, wrapped in poor swaddling clothes and lying in a manger, bless you and give you the strength to carry on your testimony with joy,” Pope Francis said.

Pope Francis: 50 years of priesthood serving God and His people

December 13th marks the 50th anniversary of Pope Francis’ ordination to the priesthood. Vatican News celebrates this milestone recalling some of Pope’s reflections regarding priests and the priesthood.
By Sergio Centofanti
On 13 December 1969, just four days before his 33rd birthday, Jorge Mario Bergoglio was ordained a priest. His vocation dates back to 21 September 1953, the Feast of St. Matthew, the tax collector converted by Jesus: it was during a confession that day, that the future Pope had a profound experience of God's mercy.

The priest and mercy

Divine Mercy has characterized his entire priestly life. Pope Francis speaks of priests as quietly leaving everything to engage in the daily life of communities, giving others their own lives, moved, like Jesus, when he sees people exhausted and “like sheep without a shepherd".
Addressing parish priests in Rome on 6 March 2014, the Pope said: “In the image of the Good Shepherd, the priest is a man of mercy and compassion, close to his people and a servant to all… Whoever is wounded in life, in whatever way, can find in him attention and a sympathetic ear....Wounds need to be treated… We priests must be there, close to these people. Mercy first means treating the wounds”.

The priest and the Eucharist

Pope Francis describes the priest as a decentralized man, because at the center of his life there is not him but Christ. In his homily during the Jubilee for Priests on 3 June 2016, he said: “In the Eucharistic celebration we rediscover each day our identity as shepherds. In every Mass, may we truly make our own Christ’s words: ‘This is my Body, which is given up for you’. This is the meaning of our life: with these words, in a real way we can daily renew the promises we made at our priestly ordination”.

The priest and the confessional

The priest plays an important part of his service to God and His people in the confessional, where he can become an expression of God's mercy. Addressing parish priests in Rome on 6 March 2014, Pope Francis said: “It is normal that there be differences in the style of confessors, but these differences cannot regard the essential, that is, sound moral doctrine and mercy. Neither the laxist nor the rigorist bears witness to Jesus Christ, for neither the one nor the other takes care of the person he encounters. The rigorist washes his hands of them: in fact, he nails the person to the law, understood in a cold and rigid way; and the laxist also washes his hands of them: he is only apparently merciful, but in reality he does not take seriously the problems of that conscience, by minimizing the sin. True mercy takes the person into one’s care, listens to them attentively, approaches the situation with respect and truth, and accompanies them on the journey of reconciliation”.

The priest and prayer

Pope Francis has always said that the priest needs to be, above all, a man of prayer. It is union with God, he says, that overcomes the countless temptations of evil. In his Letter to Priests marking the 160th anniversary of the death of the Curé of Ars, the Pope suggests reciting the Rosary every day. “To contemplate Mary”, he writes, “is to believe once again in the revolutionary nature of love and tenderness. In her, we see that humility and tenderness are not virtues of the weak but of the strong, who need not treat others poorly in order to feel important themselves”.

The priest and the poor

According to Pope Francis, a priest’s spirituality is embodied in the reality of everyday life. His is a prophetic voice in the face of the oppression that tramples on the poor and the weak. In Evangelii gaudium, para. 183, he writes of how the Church "cannot and must not remain on the side-lines of the struggle for justice". The Kingdom of God begins here on earth and it is already here that we encounter Jesus: the last judgment will focus precisely on what we have done to Christ in the poor, the sick, strangers, prisoners. We will be judged on how we have loved. But, as Saint John Paul II said, there can be no love without justice.

The priests risking their lives

In his Letter to Priests for the 160th anniversary of the death of the Curé of Ars, Pope Francis thanks those priests "who make their lives a work of mercy in regions or situations often inhospitable, distant or abandoned, even at the risk of their own lives". He thanks them "for their courageous and constant example" and invites them not to be discouraged, because "the Lord is purifying His Bride and is converting all of us to Himself"
In the same Letter, Pope Francis addresses the question of abuse. While confirming his closeness to the victims, he expresses his gratitude “to all those priests who faithfully and generously spend their lives in the service of others”.

The priest and weariness

During the Chrism Mass in St Peter’s Basilica, on Holy Thursday 2015, Pope Francis spoke openly about “the tiredness of priests”, saying it was frequently on his mind. “I think about it and I pray about it often”, he said, “especially when I am tired myself. I pray for you as you labour amid the people of God entrusted to your care, many of you in lonely and dangerous places. Our weariness, dear priests, is like incense which silently rises up to heaven. Our weariness goes straight to the heart of the Father”. The Pope described this weariness as something positive, because it comes from being in the midst of people: "It is the tiredness of the priest with the smell of sheep".

The priest and humour

Pope Francis often reminds priests "the saint is capable of living with joy and a sense of humor”. This joy comes from union with Jesus, he says, adding that he himself prays for a sense of humour every day. In a November 2016 interview with Italy’s TV2000, the Pope described how “a sense of humour lifts you up”. It is something very human, he said, but it is also close to the grace of God.

The Pope's appeal to support priests

Pope Francis asks priests to be always close to the people, but at the same time he asks the faithful to support their priests. During his homily at the Chrism Mass on 28 March 2013, he said: "Dear lay faithful, be close to your priests with affection and with your prayers, that they may always be shepherds according to God’s heart”.

COUNCIL OF CARDINALS 2019

Council of Cardinals discusses new Apostolic Constitution

The regularly scheduled meeting of the Council of
Cardinals took place at the Vatican from 2-4 December
By Vatican News
The Council of Cardinals gathered in the Vatican this week for
their previously planned meeting. Cardinals Pietro Parolin;
Óscar Rodríguez Maradiaga, S.D.B.; Reinhard Marx; Seán Patrick
O’Malley, O.F.M. Cap.; Giuseppe Bertello; and Oswald Gracias were
present for the meeting, along with the Secretary of the
Council, Archbishop Marcello Semeraro. Pope Francis also took
part in the work of the Council.
During the meeting, the Cardinals continued to discuss the draft
of the new Apostolic Constitution, focusing in particular on the
relationship between the Roman Curia and the various episcopal
conferences; and on the presence of the lay faithful — both men
and women — in decision making roles in the Church.
Cardinal Michael Czerny, S.J., delivered a report on the Synod for
the Amazon, and the Cardinals also had the opportunity to
reflect on some considerations proposed by Cardinal O’Malley on
the preparation of the post-synodal document. Cardinal Marx s
poke about the “Synodal Path” being undertaken by the Church
in Germany, and on the themes that will be focused on.
Since the previous meeting of the Council of Cardinals, in September
of this year, suggestions concerning the new Apostolic Constitution
have continued to arrive. The Cardinals will continue their reading
and evaluation of that document during their next session, set for
February 2020.

Vatican READING OF THE DAY

Date10/12/2019

READING OF THE DAY

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah
IS 40:1-11
Comfort, give comfort to my people,
says your God.
Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her
that her service is at an end,
her guilt is expiated;
Indeed, she has received from the hand of the LORD
double for all her sins.
A voice cries out:
In the desert prepare the way of the LORD!
Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our God!
Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill shall be made low;
The rugged land shall be made a plain,
the rough country, a broad valley.
Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed,
and all people shall see it together;
for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.
A voice says, "Cry out!"
I answer, "What shall I cry out?"
"All flesh is grass,
and all their glory like the flower of the field.
The grass withers, the flower wilts,
when the breath of the LORD blows upon it.
So then, the people is the grass.
Though the grass withers and the flower wilts,
the word of our God stands forever."
Go up onto a high mountain,
Zion, herald of glad tidings;
Cry out at the top of your voice,
Jerusalem, herald of good news!
Fear not to cry out
and say to the cities of Judah:
Here is your God!
Here comes with power
the Lord GOD,
who rules by his strong arm;
Here is his reward with him,
his recompense before him.
Like a shepherd he feeds his flock;
in his arms he gathers the lambs,
Carrying them in his bosom,
and leading the ewes with care.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY

From the Gospel according to Matthew
MT 18:12-14
Jesus said to his disciples:
"What is your opinion?
If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray,
will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills
and go in search of the stray?
And if he finds it, amen, I say to you, he rejoices more over it
than over the ninety-nine that did not stray.
In just the same way, it is not the will of your heavenly Father
that one of these little ones be lost."

Cardinal Tagle 2019 ( Vatican News )

Cardinal Tagle

is the new Prefect of

Propaganda Fide

Cardinal Filoni becomes Grand Master of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre. The Archbishop of Manila succeeds him at the
head of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.
By Vatican News
The Cardinal Archbishop of Manila, Luis Antonio Tagle is the new
Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.
The appointment by Pope Francis was announced on Sunday
8 December. The current Prefect, Cardinal Fernando Filoni,
assumes the post of Grand Master of the Order of the Holy
Sepulcher in place of Cardinal Edwin Frederick O'Brien,
who resigned in April 2019 and turned 80.
With the appointment of Cardinal Tagle, an Asian cardinal
returns to head Propaganda Fide (the original name of this
important department for evangelization, which is also
responsible for episcopal nominations in mission lands),
after the years of Indian Cardinal Ivan Dias (2006-2011).
Luis Antonio Gokim Tagle was born on 21 June 1957 in
Manila to a Catholic family - his father of Tagalog ethnicity
and his mother of Chinese origin - and was ordained priest
in 1982. He studied in the United States where he obtained
his doctorate in theology with a thesis on the evolution of
the notion of episcopal collegiality since the Second Vatican
Council. He spent seven years in Rome to deepen his studies
and in 1997 joined the International Theological Commission.
After serving as parish priest at the Cathedral of Imus, at
the age of 44 he was consecrated bishop of that diocese
by Saint John Paul II in October 2001. He dedicated himself
in particular to youth ministry and inaugurated the first meeting
of young Asians in Imus. On 13 October 2011 Pope Benedict
XVI appointed him Metropolitan Archbishop of Manila and
made him a cardinal thirteen months later, in November 2012.
In addition to leading the Manila Archdiocese, Cardinal Tagle
is President of Caritas Internationalis and the Catholic Biblical
Federation. With this choice, announced a few days after the
end of his trip to Thailand and Japan, Pope Francis once again
shows great attention to the Asian continent. With the designation
of Cardinal Tagle, which follows a few weeks after that of Spanish
Jesuit Juan Antonio Guerrero Alves as Prefect of the Secretariat
for the Economy, two new heads of department will be installed
at the beginning of 2020 in the Roman Curia.
Pope Francis has also appointed 73 year-old Cardinal Fernando
Filoni, Prefect of Propaganda Fide from 2011 to the present,
who becomes Prefect Emeritus of the same Dicastery, as the
new Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre.
Cardinal Filoni was Apostolic Nuncio to Iraq from 2001 to 2006
and lived in Baghdad during the war of 2003. For a year,
he was the Pope's ambassador to the Philippines before
being called to the Secretariat of State as Substitute, a post he
held until 2011. His experience in the Middle East will be valuable
in his new role, as the Order of the Holy Sepulchre cooperates
particularly with the Middle Eastern Christian communities and
supports them with many projects.
In a statement, Cardinal O'Brien expressed his great appreciation
for the Pope's decision, and said he is particularly happy that
Cardinal Filoni has been chosen as his successor: "His long and
extensive partoral and administrative service in our Universal
Church", Cardinal O'Brien said, "will be precious in guiding the
Order on its future path". 08 December 2019, 12:05
